January 17, 2025Dear Valued Customers,
We hope this message finds you well. We want to bring your attention to a significant development that will impact trade regulations starting January 1, 2024.
Abolition of Industrial Tariffs:
In a decision made during its meeting on February 2, 2022, the Swiss Federal Council has announced the abolition of industrial tariffs, as per BBl 2021 2330 BBl 2021 2330 – Zolltarifgesetz (ZTG) (admin.ch). This decision comes after the necessary amendment to the Customs Tariffs Act was successfully passed by Parliament on October 1, 2021.
Key Points:
- Effective Date: The abolition of industrial tariffs will be effective from January 1, 2024.
- Transitional Period: This deliberate choice by the Swiss Federal Council allows for minimal transitional costs for economic actors and the administration. It provides ample time for all stakeholders to prepare and make necessary adjustments.
- Administrative Oversight: The Swiss State Secretariat for Economic Affairs (SECO) will oversee the abolition, with the Federal Office for Customs and Border Security (FOCBS) responsible for implementation.
- Affected Areas: The abolition applies to goods in chapters 25 to 97 of the Customs tariff, excluding certain products in chapters 35 and 38 classified as agricultural. For a detailed overview, visit SECO’s page on the Simplification of the Customs Tariff.
Impact on Origin Rules:
- No Proof of Origin: Goods staying in Switzerland will not require proof of origin at the import stage.
- Proof of Origin Required: For goods intended for export to a free trade partner country, proof of origin is required upon export.
We encourage you to stay informed and, if applicable, make the necessary preparations for these changes. For further details and updates, please refer to the SECO website – Abolition of industrial tariffs (admin.ch)
Thank you for your attention and cooperation.
