Teamwork & Resilience Pays Off !
April 28, 2023Bridging Borders – Unforgettable Lake Geneva Run
September 26, 2023In the past days, road & tunnel closures as well as road congestion have impacted the main routes that keep Italy connected to France & Switzerland.
In brief;
- Frejus Tunnel / A43: Closure due to landslide
The road connection between Italy and France has encountered a significant setback as the Frejus Tunnel, a vital artery between the two countries, remains closed due to the landslide that occurred on the 27th of August 2023. This closure has forced SAFRAM and its partners to seek alternative routes, leading to increased travel times and disruptions for goods traveling through this route. French authorities are working tirelessly to ensure the tunnel’s safety before reopening it for regular traffic. For additional information, link to local news feed here.
- Mont Blanc Tunnel: Temporary closure & Heavy Goods Vehicle Restriction
The Mont Blanc Tunnel, another key transit passage, has also faced its share of challenges. Due to an overload of traffic stemming from the Frejus Tunnel closure, heavy goods vehicles are currently restricted from using the Mont Blanc Tunnel. This move aims to alleviate the strain on the tunnel and ensure the safety of all travelers. However, this measure has caused significant detours and delays for freight transportation.
- Navigating Alternatives: Ventimiglia and Simplon Tunnel
As the closures and restrictions impact the usual routes, SAFRAM has been compelled to explore alternative paths to maintain the flow of its customer’s goods. One alternative involves passing through Ventimiglia, a town located on the Italian French border, offering a route that bypasses the Frejus Tunnel. Another option is the Simplon Tunnel, which links Italy with Switzerland. However, these alternatives have led to longer travel times, increased costs, and inevitable delays.
- Impact on our Customers and Costs
Regrettably, the challenges posed by these closures and restrictions will inevitably impact all transport companies and their customers. As a transport company, SAFRAM, bears the brunt of longer journeys and extra expenses, these increased costs will unfortunately translate into price adjustments that will have to be passed on to our valued customers. Hopefully, this is just a temporary situation.
