November 5, 201840,000 km of roads and additional federal motorways are affected by the new toll, with the revenues financed by the users earmarked for injection into a huge national maintenance and road extension programme.
Multiplying the toll network by a factor of 2.5 will surely considerably increase the number of enterprises using it. The renovation of Germany’s road infrastructure will have an impact on every road haulage player and will necessarily also have an effect on their price structures.
The Federal Ministry of Transport and Digital Infrastructure (BMVI) has mandated Toll Collect to carry out the technical groundwork required by the extension. Those clients who are already registered with Toll Collect and whose vehicles are already equipped with on-board units don’t have to undertake anything at this point; their systems are ready. All others have to order an on-board unit online on Toll Collect’s website for clients.
Even without an on-board unit there are possibilities for every client to register: a new app, simplified online registration and new toll terminals enable easy and rapid payment.
Checking procedures
Toll gates will be installed on the country’s federal roads, together with mobile checks carried out by the federal office for goods transport (BAG). Toll gates are not radar checks. They will verify whether HGVs with a gross vehicle weight rating of 7.5 t or more have paid the toll correctly. It is easy to tell toll gates from radar equipment carrying out speed checks, as they have a different colour and the former are almost four metres high.
