Nespresso committed in 2009 to reduce by 20% the carbon footprint of a cup of Nespresso coffee by 2013, by working on several stages of its supply chain, inlcuding logistics.
As a partner of Nespresso, Safram is takingpart in its sustainability approach, called Ecolaboration™, through the implementation of a transport solution combining rail and road for freight heading to Switzerland or going to Europe. The aim is to reduce the carbon footprint by decreasing the part of overland transport within the supply chain.
By significantly reducing the kilometres done when empty, Safram and Nespresso demonstrate the advantages of multimodal freight in terms of reduction of CO² emissions, cost management and improvement of the overall transportation process.
In this respect, Safram today offers all its customers several scheduled rail-road transport routes:
– Basel – Cologne – Basel
– Basel – Como
– Cologne – Como
North-South to Switzerland:
Safram trucks pick up the goods in the Ruhr region, via Cologne railway station, where they are loaded onto the train, for an overnight journey. Having left at 8.00 pm, they arrive in Basel at 7 o’clock the next morning, to be cleared through customs between 8.30 am and 9.00 a.m. Final delivery of the goods is completed by road the same morning for destinations located within a radius of 130 km, and the day after for locations further afield.
South-North to the Ruhr :
The goods are picked up in the Berne area by Safram trucks in the early afternoon and then loaded in Basel to be transported by rail. Travelling overnight, they are transported to Cologne and then delivered via the road network in Germany and The Netherlands.
